Sigma set for sales record
The new Mitsubishi Galant Sigma range of cars I went on sale this week and the distributors have reported record advance orders for the car. Todd Motors, New Zealand distributors for the car, are holding more than j 1000 advance orders. “These orders are cer, tainly a record for our company and probably for I the industry,” said Mr D. C. McDonald, Todd’s director of operations and i marketing.
“We are now in full production of Sigmas but with the very high orders anticipate that there may be some initial delays in deliveries to customers. However, we will be doing our best to keep up with demand.” The Sigma, which was launched in Japan six months ago, has been a major factor in the 50 per cent increase in Mitsubishi market share in Japan. A last-minute hitch
occured with the actual badging of the car. The name “Sigma” has been registered by another Japanese manufacturer therefore a “Sigma” name badge could not be used on the car itself.
Sigma is the mathematical term for the “Total Sum” and is often expressed as a Greek symbol resembling a stylised letter E.
To overcome the badging problem all Sigmas wiil now have this Greek symbol as a badge on the car.
A big feature of the new model is the high level of equipment provided as standard, including a fivespeed gearbox and reclining rear seats on the 2000 cu cm models.
Prices for the Sigma range are as follows: 1600 GL (manual) $7475; 1600 GL (automatic) $7975; 1850 GLX (manual) $7800; 2000 GSL (manual) $8495; 2000 GSL (automatic) $8849.
