Bus drivers’ stoppage

Sir, — With reference to Mr Holdsworth’s statements about drivers sitting drinking tea, I would suggest that he familiarise himself with bus work. About half the drivers seen sitting watching television or drinking tea, are doing so in their own time, having been signed off a broken shift. The inconvenience of going home for two hours or so does not warrant taking a car there and back for the rest of the shift. The rest of the men are rostered for any duty. These men have been trimmed down to so few that at times it is difficult for the inspectors to cover the work because of sickness or breakdowns. The special bus department is also operated by these men. — Yours, etc., V. A. BYFIELD. April 20, 1977.
