Joint venture in solar cells
NZPA Sydney Electric Equipment. Ltd, is investing sAust2oo.ooo in a joint venture with Solarex Corporation, of Maryland. United States, to form a new company. Solarex Pty, Ltd. The company, which has an issued capital of $400,000. will develop produce and market solar energy conversion products in Australia. The United States company has marketed its products in Australia, through Electrical Equipment, for several years. The Solarex solar cell, developed by the head of the United States group. Dr Francis Lindmayer, is derived from the United States space programme. It is wafer thin and produces electricity when hit by sunlight. In America, these cells are used for medical auxiliary stations, radio repeater units, highway warning lights, and weather monitors.
A spokesman for Electrical Equipment said that there was a “terriffic application” for this type of equipment, particularly in Australia, w’ith its vast distances and many isolated research stations. The new company will develop solar cells for use in domestic and industrial equipment, battery charging units, farm products, and educational aids.
