Police to quiz man about heiress’s death

NZPA London The police hunting the killer of the Australian heiress, Janie Shepherd, are expected to question a man already remanded in custody on another alleged offence.

The two Criminal Investigation Department chiefs in the case, Detective Chief Superintendent Ron Harvey and Detective Chief Superintendent Henry Mooney, both left St Albans, Hertfordshire, the murder hunt centre, for London on Tuesday night.

Forensic examination of the body and clothing was continuing, and the search of No Man’s Land Common, near Wheathampstead, went on.

Miss Shepherd, the daughter of a rich Australian oil executive, disappeared ten weeks ago, on her way to visit her boyfriend. Her mudspattered Mini, in which there were signs of a struggle, was found a few days later. Mr Harvey said that Miss Shepherd was found fully clothed.

Most of her gold jewellery was found on the body. Money, probably about 30 pounds (about $5O) was missing, but it appeared likely that the chief motive was not robbery but a psychopathic sexual one.

The murderer was thought to have used her dark blue Mini to transport her body, the detective added.
