Village swept by lava
NZPA Saint Dems, Reunion Lava streaming from Piton i de la Fournaise volcano in i I south-eastern Reunion Island ' swept through Sainte Rose Village early on Easter Day. j ’ destroying 11 houses. No casualties were reported. The village was evacuated on Saturday after a fissure, the second in two! days, opened up in the 2631 i metre (7900 ft) mountain to let out a swathe of lava 100 metres wide. The lava poured into the sea at 2.30 yesterday morning after passing through . Sainte Rose. Bois Blanc Village, further _ down the coast, was evacI uated on Friday night as * fast-moving lava from the I first split in the. volcano , ■ rushed threateningly through I a forest, to halt in a ravine only 500 metres from the I deserted village. La Fournaise began spewling out lava on the tiny Tn-’ d'.an Ocean island six days ago. It was last seriously ac- | tive in 1960.
