Begg loses in roller skating
Ihr defending title-holder. Bill Begg, of Timaru, could only manage to till the runner up position in the three senior men's hanked track roller skating championships held at the week-end in Masterton.
The national road champion. Peter Maxwell (Master ton) won both scratch rates, over 5(M)0 and 20,000 metres. Calvin Cabitcs of Timaru collected his first national medal for third place in the shorter race, while international representative Stephen Carwell-Cooke was third in the distance race. Car-well-Cooke was the best peformed member of the NewZealand team at the last world banked track championship, and he showed his ability in the time trial when he skated last in a [field of 24 to take the title from Begg, who was one of the first to skate.
The wvrld road champion. Mrs Karen Yorke, won the 5000 m race well clear of the next competitor. The third place-getter, Cheryl Millar, was lapped. During this event the two leaders told the lap scorer he had shown lap eight twice, and afterwards it was admitted there haJ been a mistake. Maxwell continued his domination of the racing with two straight, wins against Begg in the final of the men's sprints. In the decider Maxwell led out with 400 m to go, and keeping Begg at' full stretch coasted across [the line for the title.
