English Park and cycling

Sir, —I oppose the Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation committee's decision to uplift the English Park cycle track to make wav for an international soccer field. The locality and track layout, with stands acting as formidable wind breaks, combined to help establish English Park as the centre of cycling and created many national records over the years. With road cycling being forced to outlying country areas by traffic lights and stop signs, the return to English Park for track racing was seen by the fraternity to be the last hope of bringing cycle racing to the people of Christchurch, and helping to rebuild a sport which suffered dramatically by its poor presentation at the Commonwealth Games in 1974. The track has fallen victim of bad judgment by the council. I am sure, because of recent interest in cycling in the city, the decision will be regretted in the years to come.—Yours, etc., K RADBURND. April 6, 1977.
