170 die in Iran ’quakes
> NZPA-Reuter Teheran At least 170 people have . been killed in a series of earth tremors in central and , south-west Iran, according 1 to the Iranian Government news agency. The tremors, which measured up to 6.5 on the openended Richter scale, shook the region yesterday and on Thursday. Earlier, a Government spokesman had said that at least 36 people had been killed. The Government spokesman said that tremors continued to rock the stricken areas throughout. He said that the Shah had ordered army and rural police units to help the vic- 1 tints, and army helicopters 1 were transferring the injured to hospitals in Isfahan and Shiraz. I
Southern Iran was hit by two severe earthquakes six days ago, but no casualties were reported. At least 167 people died in a huge earthquake in the area last month.
