Canterbury prominent in rankings

Canterbury has four of the top nine women tennis players in the national rankings for 1976-77. Christine Newton, who was (omitted from the Press Association list published on Thursday, retained seventh place in the order. Sally Chapman (third), Robyn Hunt [(fourth) and Judith Phillips (ninth) were the other Canterbury players to win recognition.

The province’s advance in men’s tennis was reflected by the rankings of Peter Hampton (12), Stephen Harley (13) (and Brett Hibbert (14). Last season Hampton was the highest ranked Canterbury man, in fifteenth place. The fourth member of the Canterbury team, Michael Mooney, was ranked nineteenth in the latest list.
