Early New Zealand architects and builders relied on decoration to give full effect to the buildings which served the needs of the colonial community in the nineteenth century. One of the finest examples of cast iron decoration is reproduced here from John Stacpoole’s “Colonial Architecture in New Zealand.” The iron for the verandas of this house, built by the Clark family at Hobsonville. near Auckland, was imported from Sydney’ about 1893.
