Party finances
Sir, —In M. O’Neill’s reply to C. G. Marshall on party finance he damns himself with his own statement which reads: “Does it really matter who is financing any New Zealand political party as long as there is no proof that, by financing a political party, the financier is able to change the basic policies of that political party?” No proof? Yes, that is the crucial statement. Communism is financing subversion, revolution and political upheaval all over the world. Everyone knows this but, as M. O’Neill says, how do you prove it? Let me ask how does Cuba finance an army in Africa when it cannot support and feed its own people? How did Russian arms and tanks get into these countries? Communism is closely related to cancer; we know it is there but, as yet, we cannot find a formula to combat it. Just as M. O’Neill says it is here in New Zealand. We will, in the end, prove this.—Yours, etc., T. M. MOORE April 6, 1977.
