Nelson ■ Mr David Clarkson, of Christchurch. will end a long association with several South Island [ Racing Clubs in May. i He has been judge for several clubs in the past six years, movpng into that held after ending p long term of service as com- : mentator. “After about 40 years service !to clubs I think it’s time to i slacken off/’ Mr Clarkson said •at Nelson yesterday. Mr Clarkson, who was having I his last day of judging at Nel,son. will finally quit the judge's [box at the Hororata Racing Clubs meeting at Riccarton on May 21.
This evening Mr Clarkson, who _ is Bloodstock Manager of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. will leave •* for the United Kingdom to repi- resent his firm on a buying trip. 1 He will be buying thoroughbreds and cattle while he is overseas. 1 After he gives up judging Mr - Clarkson will have more oppor- » tunities to branch out as an • owner. He races Just A Song in | partnership with th e Riccarton h 8 trainer. George Humphries, but I J up to the present he had been I 1 unable to race the chestnut, at meetings where he has been, ’ judging Mr Clarkson bought a yearling 5 colt by Beaufort Sea from Count-; » ess Mellay at Trentham in Janui ary and also intends to race this J youngster from the Humphries - stable, probably under the name! of .Just Emilius. Mr Clarkson bought the Beaufort Sea colt while in the company of two Brazilians, who bred Fritz Emilius, one of the top J performers in Brazil last year.
