Talks over Drainage Bd redundancies

Talks on redundancy payments will be held between a sub-committee of the Christchurch Drainage Board, representatives of the Canterbury branch of the Engineering Union and four shift engineers employed by the board.

The secretary of the union (Mr R. J. Todd) said yesterday that a letter to the board giving notice of intention to strike if the matter was not solved would not be withdrawn.

The engineers will lose) their jobs at the main pump-' ing station at Bromley next! year when the station is! made automatic. Because of the nature of the industry, the engineers! were required under the In-! dustrial Relations Act to give! 14 davs notice of intention! to strike. The 14 days have! passed but no action will be, taken until the talks next Tuesday. The board has been looking for alternative jobs for the men within its organisation and with other local bodies.
