2.40 p.m.— PAEROA CUP $5000; 2200 m. 2 1724 NO SURRENDER (14) 54. Has lately fulfilled all early promise and become a leading middle-distance runner and stayer. Won over 2400 m at Ellerslie in January and was just beaten over 2000 m at Hastings. Fourth at New Plymouth on Wednesday. P. Vern 3 8010 LITEN HEST (12) 53.5. Winner two starts back over 2100 m at Te Rapa but meanwhile only twelfth behind Good Lord at the Waikato Royal meeting. Capable and has to be respected. D. Peake 4 2658 FREE GOLD (2) 52.5. Good at best but form lately disappointing, including last-start eighth behind Good Lord at Te Rapa. Latest second was behind Fagan's Boy in the Matamata Cup. 6 4440 HASTY MAY (3) 50.5. Had little chance against Tudor Light and company last time but was previously fourth in the Lady Norrie JiitcllcCS 7 6231 STYLE MASTER (5) 50.5. Came through intermediate grades well and continued good form winning over 2000 m at Te Awamutu last Saturday. Impresses as sound stayer and should be hard to beat. J. Grylls 8 0090 SUPER VALUE (7) 50.5. Reached good form last spring and at peak won A.R.C, Mitchelson Cup. Let up after failing over 2400 m at Ellerslie on Boxing Day and this will be first race since. Working well enough to merit respect. A. Tweedie 9 1378 FASTA ZECAN (8) 49.5. Made some ground last start at Ellerslie after a seventh at Rotorua finishing third in the Matamata Cup. Last won at Ellerslie over 1600 m. 10 426 MORVEN TIME (11) 49. Failed last time out but finished second the time before over 2000 m at Gisborne. Hard to visualise necessary improvement. 11 1371 VOLIZ (6) 49. Racing very solidly and finished in intermediate grades with good win over 2200 m at Ellerslie. Has considerable concession in weight for this higher grade and must be respected.
G. Simonsen 12 1120 BATTLE GLEE (1) 48.5. Back after a short let-up to finish tenth over 1600 m at Ellerslie on March 5. Evidently feeling the hard tracks and reported unlikely to start. 13 5003 BRISTOL FASHION (9) 48.5. Has shown some stay ing promise and ran on behind Voliz last start. Best recent performance was for fourth in the A.R.C. Queen Elizabeth Handicap behind Ngapunawai. 14 2002 ELLAN VANNIN (13) 48.5. Shows useful form occasionally and produced one of better efforts last Saturday when second behind Stylemaster over 2000 m at Te Awamutu. Previously second to Fagan’s Bov at Pukekohe. Fair light-weight change.
K. Burke 15 0006 HASTY SON (21) 48.5. Form has been mainly mod erate and at an age when much improvement is hardly likely. Last raced in December at New Plymouth when sixth of fourteen over 1400 m. Won 1600 m trial at Matamata on March 8. 16 0220 HELL BENT (19) 48.5. Has often looked promising and managed second placings over 2200 m at Te Aroha behind Skite. and over 2085 m at Woodville, behind Sweet Mystic. Tailed field, however, last time and little chance on that run. _ W. Robinson 17 * OYAL MALLARD (15) 48.5. Form a bit patchv but includes last-start third behind Stylemaster. Chance __ settles early. U 5194 TE TAKI (18) 483. Runs on well enough on occasions and just as often disappointing. Promoted to first after finishing second three starts back over 2200 m at Paeroa. Finished fourth beliind Stylemaster at Te Awamutu last week-end. Balloted out in order of rentry:— ’9 1991 ARBOUR (16) 48. Won 2000 m high-.weight at Gisborne last start and earlier successful over a middle distance at Wairoa. Winning form has to be respected but this is harder. 2' 7586 OUR WARD (20) 48. Form in intermediate company nothing out of the ordinary and this looks tougher. 20 0778 MAYA (17) 48. Latest form hardly suggests Sven a faint chance. Scratched: Magistrate (10). Skite (4».
4.5 p.m.— ORANMORE SPRINT $3525; 1200 m. 2 0085 GAY TIPLER (4) 52. Showed signs of steady improvement since back from a spell when handy fifth last start over 1200 m at Ellerslie. Goes best on easier ground and is one to follow now that the tracks are about due to lose their sting N. Tiley 3 1020 WANDELLE (I) 52. Very capable and good second two starts back behind Soliloquy over 1200 m at Te Rapa Meanwhile well beaten be , hind Tudor Light at To; Aroha One to beat on Tc Rapa form. B Compton
4 0212 BOLD BEN (5) 51.5. Showed plenty of promise last spring as a middle-dis-tance runner and stayer. Rested late October and this will be first race since. Could be expected to need the run. 5 0061 TOMMY'S PRIDE (9) 51. Thoroughly capable up to 1600 m and came back to form in good style to take a 1400 m event at Te Awamutu last Saturday. Should carry on with it though a longer distance would probably suit him better. K. Barron 6 233 LA VALISE (6> 49.5. Game, consistent and due to win following run of minor placings since back from a spell, battled home well last time behind Blue Blood over 1200 m at Ellerslie. Entitled to be favourite 7 1236 TOP OF THE POPS (7) 49, Very smart last season and though retaining speed has not quite come up to expectations this season. Won over 1200 m at Thames earlv in January then second at Pukekohe and third behind Soliloquy and La Valise at Ellerslie. 8 1859 DOLLY CHIHUAHUA (17) 48.5. Looked good winning restricted 2000 m event at Ellerslie in November then a bit disappointing
though fifth in the A.R.C. Ladles Mile. This will be first race after a let-up. 9 1001 MASTER PLAN (19) 48.5. Good looking galloper which won easily last start over 1400 m at Gisborne. Successful earlier in intermediate sprint at Marton. Could improve further. S. Autridgo 12 CAPTAIN GENERAL (11) 48. Best known lately as a jumper and in first race since a fall last June could hardly be considered. 14 5988 IMPERIAL CHIEF (3) 48. Won intermediate 1400 m event at Ellerslie in December but form otherwise not too encouraging. Faded last time over 14O0m at Hastings to finish about midfield. R. Harrison 15 008 JACANA (12) 48. Showed plenty of ability last season but has j'et to do as well in three starts this term. Handy early only last Saturday over 1400 m at Te Awamutu. 16 0379 MIGHTY SHIFNAL (15) 48. Showed some sign of belter form three starts back when third over 1200 m at Tauranga but well beaten meanwhile in sprints at Stratford and Ellerslie. Needs to do a lot better. 17 8510 OAKVALE (18) 48. Won two starts back over 1600 m al Pukekohe without any trouble then rested. Camo back to finish unplaced over 1200 m at Rotorua. Good at bls best but will probably need another race or two. K. Reggett 18 3347 OUT OF THE CLOUDS (21) 48. Fast but unable lately to stay 1600 m in intermediate class. Likely to find this pretty tough from so far out at the barrier. 19 3030 SATIN DOLL (14) 48. Has often looked highly promising and finished third two starts back in the A.R.C. I-adies Mile. Unplaced over 2000 m in the Rovai Stakes, then spelled. Well again after let-up and worth attention, D. Peake 22 3440 TAMASHENILLE (19) 48. Faded out last start at Te Aroha and tiiis is harder. Could not be fancied. Balloted out in order of reentry:— 20 3387 SILVER IMAGE (13> 48. Retains plenty of pace but on the whole disappointing in his racing form. Will probably be handy but could have trouble in long home straight. R. Vance 11 0080 ALEDA JAY (2) 48. Winner on the course but hard to fancy much in first race since November 13 7788 DEE LIGHT (20) 48. Once good sprinter but too long below best form to be rated a chance. Scratched: Soliloauy (11 Top Beach (10), Sugar Top (22).
