Bay of Islands service
A daily air service to the Bay of Islands from Christchurch will begin on Thursday, when Mount Cook Airline introduces its Hawker Siddeley 748 “Sunbird” service.
Passengers will board the 748 at Christchurch Airport and fly on the normal Mount Cook service to Auckland. However, the aircraft will not turn round at Auckland to return south, but will continue on to the Bay of Islands.
A Mount Cook Airlines spokesman said that the 748 would fly into Kaikohe
initially, rather than Kerikeri, because the runway at Kerikeri was not ready yet. The runway contractors are behind with the construction of the sealed strip because of difficulties caused by 35-tonne boulders. When completed, the runway will be 1450 m long, of which 1190 m will be sealed. The total cost will be about $250,000. The Kerikeri destination is already being promoted by the airline in North America, and early in May a mission from the Bay of Islands will visit the South Island to promote its area as a tourist and holiday attraction.
