Colourful rose show
The Horticultural Hall was alive with colour yesterday when the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s autumn rose show was held there. The show will be open today until 9 pun.
Entries in the show, which includes an array of dahlias, chrysanthemums, roses, and vegetables, rose this year to 629, a rise of 79 on last year’s show.
The champion bloom of the show, Bon Soir, (at right) shown by R. A. Bullivant, of Akaroa, was considered an excellent example by the judge of the rose section (Mr R. Sheppard), and won the Viking Trophy. Bon Soir, Mr Sheppard said, would take a place in any exhibition or contest. “It is of the highest standard.”
Generally, the show was of a good standard considering the late season this year, Mr Sheppard said. Winners in the premier bloom section were:
Open.—Best decorative bloom: R. A. Bullivant. Best stem, not more than three flowers open: D. C. Sheppard. Best exhibition bloom: P. B. Eagle.
Novice. —Best decorative bloom: M. Lee. Best stem, not more than three flowers open: E. E. McCord. Best stem, not more than four flowers open: D. C. McMillan. Best exhibition bloom: E. G. McCord.
Special classes. —Best decorative bloom: R. A. Bullivant. Best stem, not more than three flowers open: R. A. Bullivant. National Rose Society.—Best decorative bloom: R. A. Bullivant. Beat stem, not more than three flowers open: R. A. Bullivant. Best stem, not more than four flowers open: R. A. Bullivant.
