Top award in N.Z. scouting

The national president and deputy chief scout of the Scout Association of New Zealand (Air Vice-Marshal I. G. Morrison) has received the New Zealand scout movement’s highest award, the Silver Tui.

The award was decided on by the Governor-General (Sir Denis Blundell), who is also chief scout, in view of Air Vice-Marshal Morrison’s outstanding services to scouting. Air Vice-Marshal Morrison had a distinguished war record and later became Chief of Air Staff. He was appointed deputy chief scout and national president in 1967.

Born at Hanmer Springs, Air Vice-Marshal Morrison joined the Royal Air Force in 1935 and was transferred to the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1939, after its establishment as a separate organisation in 1937. He returned to New Zealand in 1940 to train navigators, and was transferred to the Pacific theatre as senior air staff officer (Islands group), based in the New Hebrides and Guadalcanal. He later commanded a bomber reconnaissance squadron flying in the Solomon Islands and Bismark Archipelago.
