Decrease in unemployed
PA Wellington The number of unemployed registered with the Labour Department fell from 5406 to 4468 in the fortnight ended February 25. Seventeen employment districts recorded decreases in the number of unemployed, the largest being Christchurch, which had a reduction of 173. There were increases in five employment districts,
the largest being Whangarei with 31. Vacancies recorded by the Labour Department increased from 1634 to 1687, and a total of 2325 people were being paid unemployment benefits. There were 668 unemployed in Christchurch, com pared with 841 the previou fortnight, and 610 employe on special work schemes compared with 608 previously. I
