Full-time officer wanted for W.W.C.
PA Wellington The Government, the Federation of Labour and the Combined State Services Organisation will be asked to fund an office and pay for a full-time officer for the Working Women’s Council of New Zealand. This was one of many motions passed at the Working Women’s Convention in Wellington. One of the convention organisers, Ms Dianne Short, said it was felt an office and officer would ensure that the matters of concern to working women would get the attention they deserved. Groups stemming from the Working Women’s Council are being set up in centres outside of Wellington as a result of the convention, which was attended by 250
| delegates from all over the | country. These groups are to examine working women’s needs in their areas and take action on some of the matters discussed during the convention’s 13 workshops. The convention felt there was a need for trade-union training. Because of their family responsibilities, working women found it difficult to attend union meetings and education courses. The convention felt that employers should allow working women paid time off to attend meetings to discuss their awards and other union matters.
Another resolution was that child care should be available 24 hours a day. This was needed in cases of emergency and for night and shift workers, Ms Short .said.
