Disarmament
Sir, — You remark in the second leading article on Saturday, March 12: “Disarmament has to start somewhere; it makes good sense to start it in the Indian Ocean.” One could well add “and in the South Pacific.” A firm move towards the latter, which had been made by New Zealand before the last election, was repudiated with indecent haste after it. Perhaps now that there is an Administration in the United States which appears to be more sympathetic to such an idea, New Zealand might be allowed to promote it again and might even be considered “respectable” in doing so. — Yours, etc., JIM McCAHON. March 14, 1977.
