Air rescue for injured boy
A schoolboy tramp er was rescued by helicopter after a freak accident on Banks Peninsula yesterday. The boy, a fourth-form pupil at Shirley Boys’ High School, suffered serious head injuries when a rock fell on him.
He is David Velleman, aged 14, of 111 Aidershot Street, Wainoni. The accident occurred about 1 p.m. while he was tramping with a school party near Saddle Hill, between Akaroa Harbour and Lake Forsyth.
A rock several inches in diameter had bounced down a steep slope and struck him on the head, a police spokesman said. He said it was not known
whether another member of the party had dislodged the rock. The police were alerted, and a Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter took off from Wigram about 2.25 p.m. The rescue went smoothly, and the injured boy was transferred to a waiting ambulance in Hagley Park about 3 p.m. He was reported in a fairly comfortable condition in Christchurch Hospital late last evening. A police spokesman later praised the speed and efficiency of the crew of the Iroquois. “The boy was actually in hospital a little more than an hour after we got the call,” he said.
