Clock poses problems
The renovation of the Victoria Street clock may take a lot longer than expected. The top of the tower mav now haw to be taken down for repairs. However. a decision awaits an inspection of the tower by the citv engineer (Mr P. G. scoular). who is out of town until later this week.
Several Christchurch firms have already done work on the tower as part of a community project to restore it. The Municipal Electricity Department will instal a chiming system using an electric chiming clock with an amplifier and speakers. This system is cheaper than installing mechanical chimes.
The clock was first erected on the north side of the Provincial Government build,'ings in 1861. "The Lvttelton .Times” of November 13. 1861. : noted: “It promises to he of great convenience to the inhabitants of Christchurch from the fact that it strikes the hours, the tone of the chimes being distinctively heard in all parts of the town.”
The clock was removed from the Provincial Buildings in 1863, and later transferred to the present site.
