New hearing aid
Wellington reporter
Deaf children in New Zealand will benefit from a new hearing aid — a twoway radio transmitter and receiver — which is regarded internationally as a major advance in the teaching of the deaf. A class of deaf children at the Sumner School for the Deaf and the Kelston Deaf School, Auckland, will receive 16 units each, bought by the Education Department. The units eliminate all outside noise so that the children hear only the teacher’s voice. They give better quality and clearer sound than normal hearing aids and, because they enable deaf children to hear their own voices more clearly, will help them to improve their speech.
The new aids can be used in the classroom, plaj'ground, on excursions
and in the home. They weigh about 170 g and have an effective range of up to 60m. Each unit costs about $lOOO. The aids are marketed by the Danich Oticon group, which yesterday established a New Zealand Oticon Foundation to receive all profits from sales of Oticon products in this country. The money will be distributed in grants for research and for helping the deaf.
