New threat to air services

Air services throughout: New Zealand may be threatened by a dispute between the State Sendees Commission and the Association of Civil Aviation Telecommunications Technical Officers—the men who maintain navigational aids. The technical officers want the commission to meet them and discuss higher pay for the difficulty and growing complexity of their work. Airport technical officers were “overloaded,” a member of the association’s subcommittee dealing with the dispute. Mr P. E. Corner, said in a statement after a meeting at Christchurch Airport.

: He added that the officers i were expected to be able to j work any equipment at the > airport, but this was impos- ■ sible. The association had been I trying to negotiate with the • State Services Commission for about 16 months, but it t had been given little coi operation. Tire association has asked ; for talks within 14 days, otherwise the officers will ! withdraw their sendees. ■ “We have taken this action ■ because of the possible > danger to aircraft and pasI sengers due to the malfunc- ■ tion of equipment,” said Mr . Corner.
