New principal in tourist dept

A former “Christchurch Star” journalist, Mr P. B. Smythe, has been appointed principal of the overseas information and publicity section of the Tourist and Publicity Department. He will succeed Mr J. P. Campbell, who will retire soon.

Mr Smythe has worked overseas, in such positions as a press officer in the New Zealand High Commission. London, and public relations officer at Expo 70 in Osaka. Japan. In 1971 he became senior press officer to the former Prime Minister, Sir Keith Holyoake. As an assistant principal of the information and press section he has been associated with Gov-

eminent information campaigns, including those of the Metric Advisory Board and the recent energv conservation campaign

Mr Campbell is also a former journalist, who worked on the “Dominion" and was assistant editor of the “Journal of Agriculture.” A former advertising executive, he joined the Tourist and Publicity Department in 1948 and specialised in tourist promotion work. He opened New Zealand’s first tourist bureau in New York in 1956, whe he was also appointed New Zealand’s first Travel Commissioner.

Mr Campbell returned to New Zealand in 1961, and became principal of the overseas information and publicity section in 1972.
