Maoris to attempt strait again
PA Wellington A second attempt at a Maori canoe crossing of Cook. Strait is expected to be made from Makara this morning. The crossing co-ordinator, Mr Steve O’Regan, said yesterday that weather and other factors permitting, the crossing — from Makara to the northern entrance of the! sounds — was expected to take about four hours. Eight paddlers will be aboard the canoe, which will have a fishing boat travelling alongside.
The canoe has been built by the Ngati Porou tribe, from Hicks Bay on the East Coast, which is fund-raising for a marae.
A planned crossing last year was abandoned mainly because of bad weather. The canoe, named Tahupotiki, was taken back to the East Coast, lightened and modified, and is now ready to go again. If the crossing is successful, it will probably be the first Cook Strait crossing by a Maori canoe in the last 100 years.
