Trading hours for discussion
Shop trading hours and moves towards establishing closer links with other unions in the distribution industry wil] be the main issues discussed at the annual conference of the Shop Employees’ Association in Christchurch next week. Mr B. Alderdice, of Christchurch, who has been secretary of the association since 1970, will officially resign at the conference. ' He announced his decision last October, saying that he!
wished to concentrate on! local work as secretary of! the Canterbury Shop Assis-j tants’ Union and as a City I Councillor. " j
The conference has the power to appoint a successor if it wishes. The position is not elective, but other executive positions are, and there will be an election for the positions of president and vice-president of the association.
The candidates are Messrs G. R. Smith (Wellington)
and K. G. Wills (Taranaki)' for president, and M. N. Hilston (Canterbury) and K. G. Wills for vice-president. Mr Alderdice said that the : association’s submissions on! tne shopping hours would be! sent to the select committee before March 16 The presi-, dent of the Federation of! Labour (Sir Thomas Skinner)'
will present submissions on behalf of the F.O.L. The association has 11 affiliated unions with a combined membership of 26,277. Rules which would enable the association to become a national union have been approved by the Registrar of Industrial Unions and have the support, of the majority of the unions, but need the approval of all the unions before they will be put into effect.
