The Department of Solid State Physics has an academic staff of 7. headed by Professor W. A. Runciman. The principal research interests of the Department are in the experii mental and theoretical study of insulating : materials. Experimental techniques include optical, Mossbauer and electron spin resonance I spectroscopy. The Department of Nuclear | Physics at present has an academic staff of | 18. headed by Professor J. O. Newton. The i principal research interests, in addition to ion/ i solid interactions, are in the broad areas of nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions, direct interactions and nuclear spectroscopy. It is proposed to form a small collaborative group using the resources of both departments in the study of ion/solid interactions. The Department of I Nuclear Physics has a MUD accelerator and a j 2MV accelerator, both of which will be available part-time for solid state studies. Closing date: March 31, 1977.
