Price increases a ‘mad flood’
PA Wellington | The last three weeks have seen a "mad flood" of price increases, the Opposition spokesman on trade and industry (Mr W. W. Freer) said yesterday. He said there had been 420 changes in grocery items as well as major price increases in clothing and hardware. Mr Freer said that some: of the increases were "stag-: gering.” “Over Jialf of all the increases are for 5c or more with some lines such as canned peaches jumping by!
21c or 22c a can and a range of apricots rising by 31c and 37c a can. "One cheese pack has increased from $2.19 a kilogram by $2.62 to a new high price of $4.81 a kilogram.” He said it was the magnitude of these and other increases which worried consumers, who were angered by the indifference of the Minister of Trade and Industry and his refusal to publicise the increases which his department now approved in secret.
