Revenge for rape may be murder
I PA Auckland Auckland police have reacted strongly to suggestions of revenge — possibly murder — against the rapists of a 19-year-old new Zealand-born Samoan woman. Their warnings follow a report from the chairman of the Samoan Advisory Council (Mr Pua Sofi) who expressed fears yesterday for the safety of the woman's attackers. He said re- enge for a crime such as rape was a Samoan custom, and the dangerous thing was that people might take the lav. into their own hands. “There are angry feel-
mgs in the Samoan community. especially the victim’s family." he said. “If the police don't get the men first, murder mav be done." The bead of the Auckland police (Assistant Commissioner J. W. Overton), said that although the condemnation of the offenders was appreciated, people must clearly understand that in New Zealand punishment was a matter for the courts of law. “We will never tolerate any attempt to usurp that prerogative." he said. Several calls have b»*n received, with interesting ' leads which the police are following.
