Fiesta sales booming
Ford is claiming a big leap ahead of schedule in production of the new front-wheel-drive Fiesta at its Spanish and. British plants.
Fiesta was released in Britain this month and export sales from Britain into Europe started in January. However, output has already exceeded 200 a day—more than half way to meeting the ultimate capacity — enabling export plans to be brought forward. In December over 1500 British-built Fiestas worth £2.5 million were shipped to the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
Ford says that the car’s immediate success in Italy where it was launched in September has helped the company to double its market penetration in just two months. The daily order rate in Spain is running at twice the Valencia plant’s production rate which is also well ahead of schedule. Ford says that in France and Belgium 60 per cent of all Fiesta sales are outright purchases without involving any trade-in. and one in five buyers are purchasing either their first car or adding a second car to the family.
