Crust of earth for survey
A big survey, to measure !any shift in the earth’s crust ;in an area from Oxford to! Hokitika in the north and | the Rakaia Gorge to Hari;hari in the south, will be carried out by the Lands and Survey Department next year. The deformation study, which will involve the use of helicopters and up to 25 persons, will be completed within three months so that minute crust shifts will not impair figures. The survey is one ofj seven being carried out throughout New Zealand. One is now being done between Dunedin and Te Anau. The data collected will be compared with other studies that are planned to be made in about a decade to judge i the shifts, if any, in the earth’s crust. Mr R. A. Innes, the chief surveyor for the Department of Lands and Survey in Christchurch, said that groups of men, all of whom would have to be airlifted on to mountains across the land chain, would work with theodolites and geodometers.
