There are more than 30,000 plastic filtering units in the huge concrete tank, which is the first of the two trickling filters at the Christchurch Drainage Board’s sewage treatment plant. Hartly treated sewage is pumped up and dispersed from rotating booms over the filtering units through which the sewage passes. The first filter was commissioned at the end of December and its twin will be commissioned about the end of October this year.
