Mysterious voyage

A 24ft yacht of the Eventide class disappeared from her mooring at Governor’s Bay during a southerly storm on Monday night and was found submerged alongside the Cashin Quay breakwater yesterday morning. The police believe the yacht broke from its mooring and was blown four miles down the harbour, but the owner of Takitimu 11. Mr K. Talbot, of Governor’s Bay, thinks she may have been stolen. He said last evening that a kedge anchor which had been lashed to the deck of the yacht was found wedged high in rocks near Cashin Quay, and that a southerly wind should have driven her ashore near Rapaki, quite close to Governor’s Bay.

The Takitimu II has a large hole in her bow. Only the mast was visible when she was found, hut a skindiver inspected her, finding the cabin intact and a link in the anchor chain broken, suggesting

she had broken from the mooring.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board hopes to lift the yacht from the water today. She was built in 1963 and is insured for about $7500,
