Around the greens
The fours championship at. Linwood has been won by M. Moffat's team of F. Burgess, H. Molloy and E. ; Lyons. In the final, Moffat beat I. .1. Smith, 21-11.. Smith’s partners were A.i Black, H. Yates and B. J. Smith. The game did not produce a particularly high standard ,'of bowling, but Moffat seicured an early lead and he was never in much danger afterwards. Yates had better fortune in the final of the president’s fours, where he |skipped his team of R. Musson, R. Hampton and N. Peters to a 21-11 win over K. G. Murray’s four. The qualifiers in the I triples championship are I. : Smith, K. Watson. W. 'White, L. G. Calder, B. San-l sum. J. J. Anderson, C. Calder, B. Drury. Lyons, Yates. ,and F. A. The annual local authorities bowling tournament was held recently on- the ' Riccarton W.M.C. greens. Twenty teams, representing 17 authorities between Cheviot and Ashburton, took part. In a play-off, The Malvern I Countv team of B. Perrin, W. Whall, J. Robb and B. Hayes (s) beat the only i other three-game winner, a team of N. Hewinson, H. Fletcher, H. W. Thompson and F. McKenzie (s) repre-, Isenting the Christchurch Drainage Board. D. Gowans led nearly all' the way to beat A. William-: son. 21-15, in the singles 'final at Edgeware. William.son was down, 20-12, and he 'scored a two and a one be-’ Tore Gowans won the game with a toucher. The fours final between R. Spear and T. Payne was interrupted by rain when Payne was leading, 14-9. The game was resumed a week 'later and Spear recovered to' i go into the last end at 15-15. I But it was Payne who won The last end wilh a single — 'the result of a drive which ' 'took the kitty through to I the ditch. Payne's team is L.' Avis, G. White and William-: 'son. The semi-finals have been 'reached in the pairs and
i they will be between A. Johnstone and .1. Hayward and R. Spear and Johnstone. Edgeware has been playing on its new cotula green ; for a few weeks and it is 'running very well. It should 'be a great asset to the club (next season, as also will be the new pavilion which is progressing well. ❖ ❖ i E. G. Truscott came away lon the last few ends to beat I. J. Leslie, 23-16, in the , fours final at St Albans. Truscott’s team was B. Hart.shorn (substituting for A. F. Rogers), S. W. Whiteford and H .W. Van Dalsum. The scores were 8-8 after nine ends and on the nine- ' teenth end Truscott led by one point. However, a perfect draw by Truscott to' :push the kitty back a few inches earned him a three and he increased the margin on |he final end when Leslie J . tried unsuccessfuly to burn the head. ’ The team of J. Robertson D. Lambie, J. Lowry and F Amyes has won the four 1 championship at Allenton. R Lindsay, with R. Ditchfiek’ leading for him., has takei the pairs and the single | champion is A. Rowell.

Glennie was re’warded for some good per formances in recent year 'when he broke through foi his major title at Papanui — the fours. His team of .1
Lewis, A. Leftwich and C. 'Clarke beat E. Houston's |team of R. Slaughter, C. K. Jones and C. Hannan in the final that will not be quickly forgotten. Glennie was ahead 18-8 at one stage, but Houston, with Slaughter and Jones giving him close bowls, recovered to level at 18-18 playing the .last end. Glennie scored a single on 'the extra end and his team 'had been celebrating its win for a good 10 minutes when it was discovered that a domestic rule called for three extra ends to be played when the scores in a final were level after twenty-one ends. The teams returned to the green and Houston drew level again with a single on the second extra end. However, a three on the third 'end gave Glennie the title ; fo’- sure and his muchrelieved team was able to resume its celebration.
