Respect — as pay rise

PA Wellington About 18,000 members of the Cleaners and Caretakers’ Union have won a 5.88 per cent wage increase. The secretary of the Wellington branch of the union (Mr Pat Kelly) said yesterday that the increase approved on Friday by the Industrial Commission, was probably the largest allowed under the wage freeze. For the women members of the union the increases will be even greater — 10.2 per cent — because the employers have agreed to bring forward equal pay bv three months. The award, for 12 months will be back-dated to January 1. Mr Kelly said the success the union had in its award talks indicated that employers were at last respecting cleaners. “We gained a bit of respect; we were not asking them to like us, just respect us,” he said. Earlier this year the cleaners held a 24-hour stoppage after conciliation talks had broken down for a second time. Mr Kelly said that after the stoppage, the talks between the employers and the union were conducted in a much better atmosphere.
