Good Lord appeals in Te Rapa’s Q.E. II Cup

Special correspondent . Auckland Racing will be making the most of its opportunity at Te Rapa today to welcome the Queen. Preparations for the Royal visit have been in hand for weeks. The two main events of the Waikato Racing Club’s special programme drew the best horses in New Zealand. Nothing more is needed now than the blessing of fine weather. During her stay at Te Rapa, which is expected to be of some two and a quarter hours, the Queen will seen four races, the last' of which, at around 2.25. p.m.. has included in its prize a cup which Her Majesty will present to the winning owner. The presentation cere-: mony will take place in the birdcage and the Queen will leave almost immediately afterwards to fulfil the next ( of her engagements for the' day. As an owner and breeder The Queen has a knowledge and experience of thoroughbreds that would be hard to match. The pleasure she takes in racegoing and mingling with racing folk is) well known and it will be everyone’s wish that in her first Waikato meeting she finds much that is interesting l and enjoyable. The Queen Elizabeth II Cup. for which Her Majesty will present the trophy, and: the Lion Brown Sprint, unfortunately too late for the. Royal party, should provide' races worth going a long way to see. Good Lord. Kiwi Can.; Kythera and Magistrate arel acceptors for the Cup which would not be out of place; anywhere over the 2200 m ’ distance and Battle Heights: and Jan's Beau, though now; nine years old, always attract attention. The Lion Brown Sprint,! with the likes of Balmerino. La Mer, Blue Blood, Shifnal Chief, Grey Way, Tudor Light and Soliloquy in the field, promises to provide! the best 1400 metres race in years. Good Lord, the Wellington Cup winner in his last; start and to all appearances! in his training of the past 1 week just as good or perhaps even better than when at Trentham. could be the) one to beat in the cup. I In the Wellington event Good Lord had a nearperfect rails run as a help! but he might have taken first place in any case, he ran the 3200 metres out so solidly. A smallish, five-year-old: chestnut gelding by Zama-i

I zaan, a French-bred, from an Australian mare, Love In Bloom, Good Lord gains further international status through being owned by an American, Mr M. L. Hines. An attorney in Las Vegas, Mr Hines has yet to see Good Lord and as much as he would like to be at Te Rapa he has been unable to make the trip. Good Lord was one of the New Zealand horses which ran well in Melbourne last spring although he was not asked to tackle the big cup races. i Kiwi Can and Kythera, with her third placing in the Melbourne Cup, also performed with much credit. Magistrate has been one of the up-and-coming middledistance horses of the summer and Free Gold. Gold Ducat. Caruba and Fagan’s i Boy have the ability to getl I into the money. Whether the three-year-old' filly La Mer, at her first at-! tempt against all ages and in such company, can continue her 'remarkable! sequence of wins is one of the questions attaching to the | Lion Brown Sprint. La Mer won the New Zealand Oaks last time, over; 2400 metres. Back success-, fully so soon over 1400 she would show herself a real: champion. Balmerino. which as a fine; three-year-old took New Zea-1 land and Australia by storm, will be returning to racing l after a spell due to injury! and in fact will be having hisl first start in New Zealand for almost exactly a year. Blue Blood, Grey Way J Shifnal Chief. Tudor Light, and Battle Eve have won! particular distinctions as, sprinters. Blue Blood has a hat-trick of Wellington’s, Telegraph Handicaps to his credit. Grey Way a wonder-; ful tally of 36 wins and! Battle Eve a record stake-! earnings for a mare in New! Zealand.
