Talk of new harbour water main
A hint that a second submarine water main to Diamond Harbour may be in the 5 offing was dropped bv the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. 8.l Collett) at a council meeting I Collett) at a council meeting. The question of a second pipeline under the harbour was raised bv Cr K. T. Keenan. He said last ’ month’s break in the existing line highlighted the vulnerability of the Diamond Harbour community. The break came at the height of the fire .season, and the fire brigade was left with only 300 gallons of water on hand to deal with anv fires. Cr Keenan asked that consideration be given to an investigation of a second pipeline. At this point Mr Collett ' said that “something was already in the pipeline." Mr Collett would not elaborate. but later suggested that the council had alreadv con-! sidered laying a polvure- ' thane pipe. However, the pet-'' rol price rise now made steel 1 pipes a viable alternative, and this should be kept in mind bv 1 the council.
