N.Z. wine continues to sell well

A recent scientific report which stated that some New Zealand wines exceeded overseas guidelines governing the presence of chemical contaminants, has done nothing to slow local demand. Local retailers say that, if anything, the demand may have increased. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, which made the study, did not suggest there was any health hazard from drinking New Zealand wine. The Minister of Health (Mr Gill) has said that he has been informed by hL department that there is no question of a health hazard. The Health Department, he said, was making a survey of the quality of locally produced wines and would also analyse imported wines to detect any of sub-standard quality. The general manager of Bishop and Company. Ltd (Mr H. Meyers), a large retail wine outlet, said that grapes grown on the Continent were idea] for wine-making. Local wines, however, needed to have some sugar and acids added. The demand for local wines, he said, was almost exceeding supply this year.
