Last 1977 art awards list

The final list of study awards for 1977 has been announced by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. Mili Clayton, a Wellington schoolteacher, has been given a grant to enable her to study modern dance in London and New York. Mrs Clayton has performed with modern dance groups in the Wellington area, and has choreographed a number of works. Three dancers receive awards for study within New Zealand. They are Stephen Taylor, of Oakura, Taranaki, a member of the Vai Deakin Dance Theatre, Virginia Adams, a member of the same company, who comes from New Plymouth, and Mary Duncan, of Wellington, a student at the Otago University School of Physical Education. Four independent filmmakers from Wellington have received assistance to complete films. Warwick Attewell has received a grant towards his film, “The Puppet and the Stone,” about two rock climbers; Martyn Sanderson for “Andrew. Shorty, Charlie, the Bolex and Me.” a film about two Hawkes Bay shepherds breaking in a stallion: Alister Barry, for a film, part documentary, part dramatised, on the visits of nuclear warships; and John Kilev for, “One Man Broke the Fence.” about a small boy lost in the bush. An Auckland printmaker, Victoria Edwards, has been

given a grant to study print workshops in London, Toronto and Japan. Ms Edwards, who lectures at the Elam School of Art, will prepare a report for the Arts Council, which hopes to see a print workshop set up in New Zealand. Heather Forbes, who comes from Waipara, North Canterbury, receives an award so that she can continue her photography studies at the Royal College of Art, in London. Ms Forbes holds a diploma in creative photography from Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham, and is now employed at the Photographers’ Gallery, London.

James Greig, of Carterton, receives assistance toward a tour of a number of Eastern countries to study potterymaking. Mr Greig hopes to visit Japan, South Korea, Formosa, Thailand, and Indonesia. Terence McNamara, lecturer at North Shore Teachers’ College and art critic of the “New Zealand Herald,” has been given a grant to enable him to study sculpture and painting in British and European galleries. Mr McNamara’s award recognises his contribution as a critic to establishing a favourable climate for the understanding and appreciation of modern painting and sculpture. Lois Mclvor, an Auckland painter and art teacher, has been -assisted to make a study tour of Great Britain and Europe. Ms Mclvor has held regular exhibitions over a number of years, and her work has been widely praised. Two young Wellington painters. Malcolm Benham and William Mackay, and an Auckland sculptor, Terry Stringer, receive grants for special projects. Other awards go to Paul Johns, of Lyttelton, whose special interests are film, silk-screen prints, and photographv; Clive Stone, of Helensville, who js engaged on a photographic essay of the Orewa town and community: and a Gisborne sculptor, Graeme Mudge, for a special studv of form in Maori sculpture.
