Stone House work may start this year

i The Cracroft Community Centre hopes to begin the first stage of restoring the Old Stone House at Cashmere before the end of this year, and has asked the Heathcote County Council for help in obtaining loan finance. The council’s finance committee was told that the estimated cost of the first stage is $60,000, of which the centre expects to have only $30,000. They have suggested wavs in which the council could help. They are by guaranteeing or granting a loan, helping to repay a loan by making annual grants, or by supporting applications to the City Council and the Paparua County Council, or theSports and Recreation Fund; leasing or purchasing the house, if the council could not lend to a trust. The chairman (Cr J. Richardson) said he had approached the city council and its attitude appeared to be:

“Let’s see what the Heathcote County Council will do, and then we will have a look at it.” The committee decided to consult the council’s solicitor and advise the centre accordingly. Noise nuisance A finance committee discussion about whether the council should object to the Valley Inn Tavern’s application for later closing, brought to light a petition from nearby residents complaining about noise nuisance from music at the tavern. Cr J. S. Scott said the noise from the band that played there was absolutely shocking. “It drifts right up the hills.” The committee decided that the application for later closing could not be linked with the noise nuisance, and that the latter would have to be dealt with under the

council’s noise by-laws. Cr E. G. Collins suggested that a letter to the landlord telling him that a petition had been received from local residents, would be all that council could do at this stage. Little support The council is concerned about the lack of support the Landsdowne Terrace Community Centre is receiving from local ratepayers and members of the public. Cr R. M. Cunningham told the finance committee that he was very disappointed at the response, particularly after all the work the council had put into providing this facility for the area. He said the management committee, which consisted of six ratepayers and himself as the council’s representative, had been working hard to get things moving, but it was now up to the local residents.
