Bridge down

The demolition of the oldest part of the Clarence River bridge, north of Kaikoura. has been completed by a team of experts from the Army and the Ministry of Works and Development. Work on the third and final phase of the demolition began on Monday. By Wednesday, the piers supporting the bridge had been toppled. The steel-encased piers were shattered by ex« plosives after the concrete had been ruptured by a thermal lance, which uses

gas to produce an extremely hot flame capable of cutting through concrete. The toppled piers were dumped beside the river, lenders have been called for breaking up the waste material. The steel encase rnents will be sold by the Ministry as scrap. Wooden spans <jn the south side of the bridge were also taken down, and will be sold. Two steel spans at the northern end of the bridge have been left in place. They will be. removed by the Ministry later for use elsewhere.
