U.S. Navy ship held up in port

A deep crack, 25mm wide, in its 50-ton lifting boom has held the United States Navy supply ship Bland in port at Lyttelton.

The fault w’as discovered yesterday afternoon when final preparations were being made for the departure of the fully laden ship for the Antarctic.

If the Bland had left without the steel boom being repaired, several items of heavy equipment would not have been able to be unloaded w'hen she reached Winter Quarters Bay below McMurdo Station. Lyttelton shipwrights began welding the crack early last evening, and according to a Navy spokesman were prepared to continue until the job was completed. The Bland is expected to leave Lyttelton today.
