Bakers agree to talks

Canterbury cake and bread-baking employers have agreed to negotiate with the Canterbury' branch of the Baking Trades Union on hours of work.

The union had given the employers until 5 p.m. yesterday to indicate a willingness to take part in “constructive negotiations” on the issue.

The branch secretary-(Mr T. A. Waters) said yesterday that the cake-bakers’ employers had agreed to the union’s claim of an ordinary week from Monday to Friday and the bread-bakers’ employers had agreed that the principles of the union’s claims on the hours of work were acceptable “this round of talks.” Mr Waters said the union’s management committee would meet tomorrow to discuss the reply of the bread-bakers’ employers.

“We are satisfied with the replies except the reference to this round of talks,” he said.
