'Par' golf
Beating ones age is an ambition nurtured by many golfers as they move through the 70s, but it is one that very few achieve. The onearmed Rangiora player, Larry Devlin, now 85, is one who has done it many times.
Last week at Shirley, Bill Caldwell, a wellknown member of the Christchurch club and the father of the resident professional, Colin Caldwell, went very close to returning a score lower than his age. He is 81, and he had a round of 81. According to the authoritative "British “Golfer’s Handbook,” equalling or beating one’s age in the 80s is fairly rare.
This explains why it leads off a segment about low-scoring veterans with notes on Jimmy Drake, a member of the Miramar club, Wellington. Drake, when 89, had beaten his age no fewer than 192 times. He first did it when he was 70, with a round of 69. He had lost count of the number of times he had equalled his age.
