TROUT IN A SNOWY RIVER

Fly Fishing For Trout. By Carl Massy. A. H. and A. W. Reed. 175 pp. $7.95. (Reviewed by H. M. Studholme)

This book deals mainly, with the fishing once available around the headwaters of the Snowy, Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers, the area well known now as the heart of the vast Snowy River Scheme. It is thus of principal interest to Australian anglers, or any New Zealanders who might be contemplating a fishing trip to waters which in an earlier time offered sport at least the equal of any offering in New Zealand. Much of the book is aimed at

instructing the novice, and while most of the advice is sound enough, it .is put forward in the rather ponderous manner books of the kind seem often to invite. The later sections of the book, though they are entirely about Australian fishing, are of wider interest.

Opening up the Snowy Mountains by the engineers has inevitably left famous waters overfished and a once remote locality over-run by tourists. Massy’s discussions of the management problems that have arisen are applicable to New Zealand developments, and are of interest and value.
