New bridge soon

Work on the construction of the new traffic bridge across the Kowhai River on State Highway 1, two miles south of the K a i k o u r a township, started in April this year. The bridge is being built as part of the plan by the National Roads Board to upgrade State Highway 1 to a class 1 highway, and the contractor, John C. Smith of Rangiora, hopes to complete it by next April. The new double-lane bridge, which is 540 ft long, will replace the old single-lane wooden structure, which has been dam-

aged on numerous occasions by floods. The old bridge was strengthened a few years ago to take the increasing amount of heavy traffic now using the highway.
