Lees refuses to be daunted
Despite having just returned from an arduous two month tour of Pakistan and India, Otago’s new Shell series cricket captain, Warren Lees, is very enthusiastic about the coming first class season.
Lees is happy with his own fitness although he has one sofe finger. He is also looking forward to the task of captaincy, although with some apprehension.
“A lot of people are writing us off but we have a great team spirit and a lot more determination.”
Lees says Otago’s spin bowling is the team’s strongest point and adds that it is the second best in the country. “Obviously our side is a lot younger. Our young batsmen have performed well and I hope three or four of them come off.”
He says he’s glad Otago has a couple of matches on Carisbrook this year as their spin attack is suited to that ground. Although they have all the fielding positions well covered, Lees thinks Otago are a bit short of “run around fielders,” to cut out the ones and twos. Canterbury, he believes, is the best balanced side in the country but he hopes Otago’s batting is good enough to stop Canterbury bowling it out once, let alone twice.
After an inspection of the pitch, Lees thinks it should have something for everyone. “The ball will bounce a bit and will also come on to the bat.”
Otago’s twelfth man for the match will be either Richard Webb or Phil Morris.
