Coaching school for local yachtsmen
An intensive coaching programme has been planned for Canterbury yachtsmen who have earned the right to represent the province in national contests later this season. It will be held at Pigeon Bay on December 26, 27 and 28.'
Mr Hugh England, a spokesman for the Canterbury Yachting Association’s coaching committee, said yesterday
that the scheme would be particularly beneficial to the leading junior (P-class) and intermediate (J.C. class) skippers. However, it was expected i that crews in the Javelin, R, I 470, O.K. dinghy and Laser classes would also attend the
seminar, which is to be held in conjunction with the Pigeon Bay club’s annual regatta.
Each day would start with a briefing, followed by on-the-water instruction from the association’s new caching craft. Once ashore again, there would be lectures and then a debriefing, Mr England said. The official in charge will be the very experienced Javelin helmsman, Dave Elder, assisted by Ross May and Neville England. “It is intended to cover almost the entire area of yachting training in a crash programme designed to lift the standard of our representatives. We are anticipating a good attendance, although some of the senior classes might already be travelling to their national events,” Mr England said. The coaching boat has been used extensively since it was bought at the beginning of the season. Bryan Treleaven conducted a course at Pigeon Bay last week-end, and on Sunday Neville England will take charge of an instruction afternoon at the Christchurch club.
