Telephone books by computer

PA Wellington The preparation and production of telephone directories would be computerised, the PostmasterGeneral (Mr Templeton) said.

Programmes and complete documentary support for the change had been bought from the British Post Office, he said in a statement.

“This high-speed computer system, which has cut United Kingdom telephone directory production time by half, will be adapted by the New Zealand Post Office to meet our requirements,” Mr Templeton said. The Government Printing Office had already

installed equipment capable of producing telephone directories from computer data input. Mr Templeton said the time taken between the closing of listings for the directory and the issue to the customers would be substantially reduced, and directories would be more up to date. The alphabetical section of New Zealand’s directories would be computerised first, and the yellow pages second, Mr Templeton said. “On present planning, we envisage the first directories printed under the new sytem to appear within two years,” he said.
